Sort of but not quite

Universities are starting to publish articles on PTSD, of course CPTSD is not mentioned because it is not yet an “official” diagnosis.  Here’s the link to the article.

The part I get frustrated is the bending of the causes to fit their agenda:

“We must see PTSD, and other trauma-related disorders, as mental health issues that face many survivors of human rights violations,” said Tina Kempin Reuter, associate professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s College of Arts and Sciences and director for UAB Institute for Human Rights. “Whether they’re survivors of genocide, ethnic cleansing, racial or ethnic persecution, and other forms of direct and indirect violence, many of these individuals continue to battle their traumas across their lifetime.”

Yes, it is human rights which include the rights of a child to be raised without abuse.  The right of a person to walk down the street without being assaulted.  Human rights are violated but this article is trying to twist it to fit their scenario.  Treatments recommended is online or phone therapy.  I tried that….it did not go well.  That layer of technology mask the nuances of body language and other nonverbal communication.  I believe it is better than no help at all but there are lots of problems with it.  The article mentioned not having insurance to cover the cost.  Most insurance, if they give any visits, max out at 10 visits.  I went for 10 years.  I will agree with the mental health system is a mess.  It needs attention.  I agree with the fact that mental illness is still a taboo subject.  I experienced being ‘let go’ from a job because I was too difficult to work with.  Most of the article was fairly accurate.  The hope I am feeling is a university published this article.  Maybe they will start teaching about the issues of trauma in their psychology classes.  It is hard to find a trauma based therapist if they are not taught about trauma in their education curriculum.  I am not holding my breath for change but I am feeling twinges of hope that some day more will be done to help survivors of all kinds of abuse.
