I needed to visit my past to understand why I do what I do today. I need to plan for my future so I know what direction I need to go today. But if I live in my past or hope only for my future I miss out on the amazing things that can happen today.
Mindfulness and grounding are techniques that help me to stay present, right here, right now. Part of my survival from my past was my ability to disconnect from a horrific reality. My counselor guided me through several past events, however after a certain point he would ask me what happened next and I replied, “I don’t know, I’m at the beach.” When I was a teenager I felt very confused when I realized I had only been to the beach on two occasions in my life. I puzzled why did I have so many memories of going to the beach. I was no longer present.
